Midsize sedans like the Kia Optima and Ford Fusion are built to offer a comfortable interior and a stylish design. So, which one is right for you? What else does each model have to offer?

Maguire Kia finds out for drivers in Ithaca, Corning, and Cortland with this Kia Optima vs. Ford Fusion comparison.

Specs & Fuel Economy

A midsize sedan should provide you with a smooth ride, whether you're commuting to work or taking a long road trip. The Kia Optima delivers that kind of drive with a 2.4L I-4 engine that gets up to 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. It's both fun to drive and efficient with an EPA-estimated 25 MPG city and 35 MPG highway.[i]

The Ford Fusion can't quite provide you with the same power or fuel economy. Under the hood, you'll find a 2.5L I-4 engine. Despite being larger, it can only get up to 175 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Its added size also means it needs to stop for gas more frequently, with an EPA-estimated 21 MPG city and 31 MPG highway.

Safety & Driver-Assistance Features

The Kia Optima keeps you safe with seven airbags throughout the interior. This advanced system includes front airbags, front seat mounted airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and full-length side curtain airbags. Everyone on board can also strap in tightly with front seatbelt pretensioners and Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) in the back seats.

Additionally, there are lots of driver-assistance features on board that can help prevent accidents by giving you more awareness during your drive. Some of the features that come standard include:

  • Blind Spot Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assistance

With its standard driver-assistance features and interior protection, the Kia Optima was named a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Ford Fusion also comes with a reliable airbag system, LATCH, and a number of similar driver-assistance features. However, it wasn't able to earn the same high safety rating from the IIHS.

User-Friendly Infotainment Systems

In addition to all its standard safety features, the Kia Optima comes with an infotainment system that can keep you connected wherever you go. The UVO link system features an 8-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard. It's Bluetooth® compatible and comes standard with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.

The Ford Fusion also comes with a Bluetooth®-compatible infotainment system. Unfortunately, it's standard SYNC® system only has a 4.2-inch LCD screen. While Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™, and a touchscreen are available, they're not offered on every trim level.
